  • This exhibition is the museum debut for this Chicago-based Venezuelan born artist whose work explores our psychological relationship to narrative. In his collages, photographs, sculptures, and site-specific murals, Herrera employs formal editing devices that abruptly recombine the figurative and spatial elements of cartoon and animated imagery to produce enigmatic associations of a profound and playful sort. With a calculated cropping and compression meant to confound, these works ultimately expose interpretation and the desire to construct meaning as psychologically forceful acts.

Herrera’s exhibition will be accompanied by related educational programs as well as a fully illustrated catalogue with two critical essays.

In conjunction with Herrera’s exhibition, the Society will host Ensemble Noamnesia’s presentation of the works of influential German composer Helmut Lachenmann. Lachenmann’s month-long residency in Chicago (October-November) will be jointly sponsored by The Renaissance Society, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Goethe-Institut Chicago.
