Panel: South Side Connections

2015

South Side Connections was an afternoon of historical investigation co-presented by four long-standing South Side arts organizations: the Renaissance Society, the Hyde Park Art Center, the South Side Community Art Center, and the Smart Museum of Art.

This event was facilitated by the Renaissance Society as part of our Centennial program, and hosted by the Rebuild Foundation at the Stony Island Arts Bank. It aimed to combine audiences, share unique and overlapping histories, and establish a foundation for future collaborations that can continue to nourish these communities.

Rebecca Zorach, Crowe Professor of Art History at Northwestern University, presents a lecture on historical points of intersection among the collaborating organizations. Representatives from each organization then share various archival materials and ephemera in an “unfurling,” a form of experimental show-and-tell originated by Never The Same, which sees the archive as a beginning rather than an end. This activity is led by artist Faheem Majeed.

This event is supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art, and presented in partnership with Hyde Park Art Center, South Side Community Art Center, the Smart Museum, Arts + Public Life, and Rebuild Foundation.
