Selected by Jennifer Packer, the videos in this program reflect a range of individual artistic perspectives and subjects, and yet also reveal potential affinities and hints of a shared foundation. These works by Tomashi Jackson, Sable Elyse Smith, Sondra Perry, Cauleen Smith, Martine Syms, and Steffani Jemison variously reflect on memory, identity, personal histories, and digital technology. Together they suggest how moving images can be powerful vehicles for attention and accountability, at once critical and playful.
The program takes its title, Dear watchers in the shadows, from a poem, “Center of the World”, by Safiya Sinclair.
