This new trio—formed by three of Chicago’s most inventive musicians, each of them an instrumentalist and composer—has developed a shared methodology that starts with free improvisation and adds in a variety of analog tape techniques: looping, manipulating, slowing down, and speeding up their own recorded material. To mark the opening of part 2 of Palomar, they perform live within the exhibition, presenting a new piece titled Circumbinary Moons. As they shape and reshape a sonic landscape for this setting, they are also playing with experiences of time. Sound becomes a series of orbital loops with their own cycles, following elliptical paths before returning to a point of origin.
