This spring, Jay Heikes brings a new hybrid work to the Renaissance Society, featuring sculptures that double as instruments, projected video, live performance, and layers of overdubbed sound. The project’s live elements in the space interweave with its prerecorded parts, the two meeting or combining without an evident hierarchy. Heikes has a wide-ranging practice that encompasses painting and sculpture as well as time-based forms like video and sound. Across all these mediums, materials transform or mutate and new atmospheres emerge in his work, with an alchemical sensibility, hints of improvisation, and often comic overtones.
