Harraga, “those who burn” in Arabic, refers to North Africans who attempt to illegally migrate to Europe via the Straits of Gibraltar. Hannoum’s talk is based on a 2009 ethnography he conducted with young Harragas.
Abdelmajid Hannoum is Associate Professor of Anthropology and African and African-American Studies at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. He is the author of Violent Modernity: France in Algeria (2010) and Colonial Histories, Postcolonial Memories (2001). He is currently working on immigration and globalization in Tangiers.
