The Renaissance Society presents the first American exhibition of stoneware by Ruth Duckworth, now visiting instructor in Ceramics in the Department of Art at Midway Studios. All the pottery in the exhibition has been created since Mrs. Duckworth arrived to begin classes in October 1964. She is the third in a series of distinguished visiting ceramicists, having been preceded by Erik Ploen of Norway and Japan’s Hiroaki Morino.
Ruth Duckworth’s home and studio is Kew, Surrey, England. She has taught at Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, while continuing an active career as an artist potter that has brought her recognition throughout Europe. Her most recent London exhibition was held in November after she had come to Chicago, and is reported a notable success. Meanwhile, her very first American pots took the Haeger Pottery Award of craftsmen in Illinois; one of the pots entering the collection of the University of Southern Illinois. Many museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum of London and the Stedlijk Museum, Amsterdam, Holland, have purchased Mrs. Duckworth’s pottery for their permanent collections.
